Creative Thinking for Independent Learning

A competency-based curriculum

A NEW APPROACH FOR KS3 THAT ENHANCES FLEXIBILITY, ENGAGEMENT AND INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Opening Minds is an innovative curriculum approach, endeavouring to provide an educational experience that will help equip students for a demanding future in the 21st Century.  In an era of rapid change, young people need to become flexible, independent learners with resilience and empathy and teachers need to create a curriculum which develops these skills and attributes.

Opening Minds is the RSA competency-based curriculum that aims to create the following competencies through a project-based approach cross-referenced to the KS3 National Curriculum.

Competences for learning

  • For learning
  • For relating to people
  • •For citizenship
  • •For managing situations
  • For managing information•

You can, however, choose competencies that are relevant for your school context

These are taught by the same teacher and integrate subjects such as RS, History, Geography, English, ICT, Citizenship and Learning to Learn.  Projects that have been piloted have included:

Smart Brain.          Fair Trade.          The Olympic Games.

The aim is to create transferable skills in literacy and ICT, independence in learning and teamwork skills through the projects.  At Campion School this project has been a huge success with teachers, students and parents.
